Future of Fitness Part One, The Evolving Coach

Future Of Fitness Part One, The Evolving Coach

This week the Barbell Shrugged Podcast covered some theories on the future of fitness and proposed some unique ideas.  So much to unpack and to expand upon that I am going to cover this in a couple different posts.  It seems that a constant theme within all the podcasts I've been listening to lately and television for that matter, is the impact of technology and human consciousness (Westward has my mind BLOWN).  As technology progresses and becomes more and more complex, we will be constantly plugged in, how do we maintain some type of human connection?  Joe Rogan just had a great bit talking about how connected we are to screens, that if a pilgrim traveled forward in time they would think glass would be some sort of demon talisman that has us hypnotized.  And that pilgrim wouldn't be far off.  Think about how much time your eyes are focused on glass in a day, between phones, watches, television, iPads, I would say the majority of our days our eyes are connected to glass.  10 years ago that wasn't the case, so where will we be in another 10 years?

I think many of us are beginning to realize our addictiveness, I've had to deal with being addicted to Instagram, ohhhh the increasing likes and followers, she's quite the seductress.  Could I delete it?  Sure, but its a valuable tool in reaching people and promoting a healthier lifestyle so I have had to monitor using it and make sure I'm not going overboard.  I've realized the more and more we are drawn into the world of screens we become less aware of ourself and substance.  I don't want to live my life on the surface I want to dig deeper and look for more meaning, but its tough with this world of screens constantly pulling me back.  It's a real struggle of finding a balance, but there have been reactions to it more and more which can be seen through the rise of mindfulness.  I would say meditation in the past few years just within my own interactions with people has increased tenfold.  And there have been other pockets of people trying to push back as well.

But it is inevitable that our lives will become more automated, which could make us even more sedentary.  And this is what the guys on the Barbell shrugged podcast pointed out, and they don't believe a coach can be replaced so easily with automation.  That people seek human connection person to person and that will increase the value of the coach even more.  And I feel it myself, on the days I have devoted to reading and writing, after a few hours I miss being at the gym and interacting with people.  It isn't all about training protocols and movement mastery, its relating to people on a deeper level, to get under the hood and see whats really going on.  Gary Vaynerchuk always talks about how valuable EQ is or emotional intelligence, and as coaches it isn't about just having a high Gym IQ, of drawing up workouts and nutritional protocols, its providing clients with that personal connection that technology will continue to chip away.  And some coaches might look at this and want no part, but me, I'm all in.  I want to provide workouts that are best for people (that will be discussed in next weeks post) but also through my clients get away from the world of screens and continue to dig deeper....well, before I'm replaced with a  WestWorld robot.
